My father was born in Farmington, Missouri on 29 August 1927 to William Samuel Kelley and Ollie Byrd LeGrand. His father was a coal miner as were most of the men in his family. My dad was 16 years old when his father suddenly died in the coal mine. By this time his sister Bernice and his brother Herman had moved away from home. After his graduation from high school he enlisted in the Navy in May of 1945. He served as a medic during his time in the service.
The medical field followed my father the rest of his life. After his time in the Navy, he moved to Dallas where he met my mother. My mother Dorothy Buffington and father were married in February of 1954. They lived in Dallas and raised their three daughters and four sons. My dad was a good husband and great father. His fight with melanoma is what eventually took his life. He was proud of his children and grandchildren. He was a convert to Catholicism and also a proud member of the Knights of Columbus.
