Jennings parents, Rev. David and Nannie [née Oates] Kerr, died within a week of each other in May 1874, leaving Jennings and his fours siblings orphans. The five siblings lived with various sisters & brothers of their father's in North Carolina and South Carolina. Jennings, age 13, at the time of his parents death, lived in Charlotte with his aunt & uncle before moving to Seattle, Washington in 1884.
