Birth: Jun. 17, 1922
Troy
Rensselaer County
New York, USA
Death: Aug. 19, 1943, Italy

James Robert Curtis, was one of eight children of Peter Thomas and Catherine Veronica Kehn Curtis. His father died when he was two years old. He was a graduate of Catholic High School in Troy New York and was a sophomore at Manhattan college at the time of Pearl Harbor. He enlisted two days later in the Army Air Corps. He attended the Army Air Force's Bombardier School in Big Spring, Texas and upon completion of the course at the end of 1942, he earned his wings and was commissioned a second lieutenant. He was sent overseas and on August 18th, 1943 he had written home to his mother saying that he was well and enjoying his assignment. The next day, August 19, 1943, he was a bombardier on a B-24 that was part of a formation which left Libya for a high altitude bombing raid on Italy. While flying to the bombing site, the plane began showing smoke from the engines, after which it went into a dive and crashed into the ground and exploded. There were no survivors / parachutes seen. His family was notified and he was declared missing. His mother held out hope that he somehow survived and was taken prisoner, but by early 1944 they were notified that he was presumed dead. The remains of the crew were returned to the United States and buried in a group grave at Arlington National Cemetery in 1949.

I never knew you Uncle Jimmy. My father John Curtis was your brother and we did visit your grave maybe 20 years ago. Your sister Ro was there too. Dad cried like a baby as he was still feeling your loss. He is with you now.
