Rufus Heldman, who often went by his middle name (Bert), was the son of John Adam Heldman (c1809-1883), a wealthy furniture maker in Mansfield who was originally from Hesse-Darmstadt, and his second wife, Lucretia Catlin (c1829-1873).

On the 14 June 1890, Rufus married Jennie M. Lightcap (1872-1905), the daughter of Samuel S. Lightcap (1844-1893) and Sarah Jane Saunders (1842-1887), in Richland Co., Ohio. Rufus and Jennie had at least four children between 1890 and 1903: Pluma, Carl, Wilbur, and Nellie. They lived in Summit, Crawford, Stark, and Wayne counties before returning to Richland County. Almost two decades after Jennie died, Rufus married Mary Ann (Kelby) Franks (c1865-?), the daughter of George Kelby (1831-1897) and Caroline Tinsler (c1837-?) and widow of S. N. Franks, on the 21 February 1924 in Wayne Co., Ohio.

Rufus didn't go into the furniture making business, but rather he became a tinsmith like some of his brothers, before becoming a plumber, a career he held until he retired.

Rufus died at the age of 74 at Hammond Rest Home in Mansfield, Richland Co., Ohio from arteriosclerosis.
