SERVICES HELD FOR ALF GRIFFIN FORMER NOKOMIS MERCHANT
Passed Away At Home of Daughter in Decatur; Aged 90 Years

Funeral services for Alf Griffin, former Nokomis business man, were conducted at the Dude-Nicol funeral home at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday. Rev. Elmer Freed of Decatur officiated and interment followed in Nokomis Cemetery.

Mr. Griffin passed away at 1:55 p.m. Monday in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Harrison D. Fischer, in Decatur, where he had made his home for the past several years. At the time of his death he was aged 90 years, 3 months and 5 days. He had been in failing health for several months.

Alf Griffin was one of ten children born to Eleizer and Sarah (Simpson) Griffin. He was born on August 2, 1852, in London, England. With his parents he came to the United States as a child and the family lived at Jacksonville, Ill., for several years until coming to Nokomis in 1876.

At that time Mr. Griffin became a bookkeeper in the old Nokomis National bank, which he served as cashier for a number of years. Later he and his brother, Jesse S. Griffin, became partners in a hardware and furniture business which they operated for a number of years. Mr. Griffin sold his interest to his brother, then engaged in the real estate and insurance business for some years, later helping to organize the old Farmers' National bank, which he served as cashier for number of years.

In 1920 Mr. Griffin retired from business and lived in St. Petersburg, Florida, and in Hendersonville, N.C., before returning to spend his last years in Illinois. For the past 10 years he made his home in Decatur with his daughter, Mrs. Harrison Fischer, and family.

The deceased was three times married, all of his wives preceding him in death. His first wife was Sarah Price, and she died a few years after coming to Nokomis. There was one daughter, now Mrs. Genevieve Shoemaker of Chicago, born to this marriage.

Later, Mr. Griffin married Miss Belle Freeland, who died in 1918. Mrs. Fischer, formerly Virginia Griffin, is the child of this union. About 20 years ago Mr. Griffin and Mrs Nancy Freeland were united in marriage and she passed away while they were residing in Hendersonville, N. C.

Besides his two daughters, Mr. Griffin leaves one brother Jesse S. Griffin, of Hillsboro, two granddaughters, Miss Laura Belle Fischer, a teacher in the Decatur high school, and Miss Betty Fischer, who is with the Red Cross and is located at Camp Gruber, Okla., and a grandson, Harrison David Fischer, at the home of his parents in Decatur.

A short funeral service was held at Decatur at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday before the body was brought to Nokomis for final rites.
