Laurens W.Cook, Jr., 74 of 381 Greenway Lane, a prominent Decatur business man and Central Illinois farm owner died at 6:15 am Thursday in Vero Beach,Fla.
Mr. Cooks family founded the St. Nicholas Hotel several years before the Civil War. He was its former manager before it was sold in 1953 after the death of his mother Mrs. Laurens Cook Sr.
During World War I Mr. Cook was an ambulance driver in Italy. He was also Lieutenant commander of Glenview Air Force Base during World War II. A great interest of Mr. Cooks was experimental farming which he had engaged in with his farms throughout the area.Special projects included his work with pigs and soil conservation. Mr.Cook wrote articles for local and area papers in regard to farm issues. He also at one time presented testimony in Washington before a U. S. Senate Agricultural committee.
He was born in Decatur a son of Laurens W. and Aileen Laux Cook.
A graduate of Notre Dame university, South Bend, Ind. Mr. Cook was a member of the Country club of Decatur and the Decatur club
On Aug 18, 1929 he was married to Jane Irving in Joliet. Survivors include his wife, a son Laurens I of Essex, Mass., two daughtres Mrs. William G.(Martha) Hall Jr, of Baltimore Md. and Mrs. Paul A.(Wendy) Geckkeler of St.Louis Mo.,three sisters Mrs. H.L.(Aileen) Bering, Mrs.G.A.(Dorothy) Sheehan both of Decatur and Mrs. George (Azalea) Wetzel of Bloomington and seven grandchildren, one brother proceeded him in death.
Memorial services will be at 3 pm Monday in the Dawson & Wikoff funeral home. Private burial will be in Fairlawn cemetery.

Mr.Cook was removed from Fairlawn cemetery and buried with his wife
in the Faries Mausoleum Feb 1 1984.
