~ He was a QUAD 2nd/3x Cousin of Frank & Jesse James....who never knew it! He passed just a few months before the connection of his "lost" maternal lines (his Mother, Grandmother, and G Gma all died when relatively young) was made...his 3rd G Gpa was GEN Jesse Cole Lindsay (KY), the uncle of Zerelda Cole-James-Samuel, and Grand Uncle of Frank & Jesse James!

~ Catholic High '55, L.R. Ark...Class Salutatorian & ALL STATE in Football, Basketball & Baseball (subject to verification for Bsktbll).

~ University of Oklahoma '59...Navy ROTC & Baseball Scholarships. Member of the "1957 National Championship" winning, OU ROTC Pistol Team. He proudly attended his 50th Reunion in 2009, in the company of his Grand-daughter Stephanie Powers (OU '08)!

~ Northeast Louisiana University: Masters degrees in Chemistry & Business Administration.

~ DEDICATED "ZEBRA": Baseball Umpire, Basketball Official & Football Referee, in AR, OK, CA & LA....Youth, H.S. & College levels for nearly 60 years. This was his passion...and he LOVED every minute of it! The Northeast Louisiana Football Officials Association has named the "Tom Powers Spirit Award" in his honor, and all have worn his TJP initialed patch on their uniform sleeves in the 2011 Season! Trey Albritton was chosen as the first recipiant in Nov 2011.

~ Pulp & Paper Industry Executive, Consultant, Innovator, and Inventor...1963-2011. Pioneer of many modern paperboard coating, laminating & packaging techniques and processes. In 1988 he was the taskmaster responsible for "engineering" the Holographic Cover of the 100th Anniversery Edition of The National Geographic Magazine.

~ COMMANDER, Surface Warfare Officer, US NAVY. Took his ROTC 'Summer Cruise' aboard USS NEW JERSEY (BB-62) in 1956. Commissioned an Ensign in 1960, he retired as a Commander after 28 years (3 Active Duty/25 "READY" Reserve) service. He served aboard USS ENHANCE (MSO-437), and was a "Plankowner" on USS ALBATROSS (MSC-289). Never in combat, but definately rode in "Harm's Way"...as he spent the entire Cuban Missile Crisis (Oct '62) 13+/- miles off the east coast of Russia on a (very) small Minesweeper, with nothing but a (single) 5-inch gun for defense....and weathered a Pacific Typhoon (Hurricane) on same! He was the CO for many years of the Monroe Naval Reserve Center. A "Cold War" Warrior!

Funeral services for Mr. Thomas J. Powers, 73, of West Monroe will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, January 22, 2011 in the chapel of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of West Monroe. Father Frank Coens will officiate. Interment will follow at Kilpatrick's Serenity Gardens under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home, West Monroe.

Mr. Powers was born August 1, 1937 in Little Rock, Arkansas and passed away January 19, 2011 in West Monroe. He retired from the United States Navy after serving 3 years active duty and 25 years Navy Reserve. He retired after officiating for 50 years at the high school and college level in football and basketball. He was presently serving as the Assignment Secretary for the Monroe Football Officials Association. He retired as a manager from Graphic Packaging after a lengthy career.

Mr. Powers was preceded in death by his parents, John Patrick and Grace Mitchell Powers; his first wife, Anne Barkley Powers; brothers, Pat and Dick Powers; a sister, Mary Ann Powers; step-mother, Edna L. Powers.

Mr. Powers is survived by his wife of 30 years; Wilma Williams Powers; son, John Vincent Powers and wife Sheri; daughter, Lisa Halley and husband Stephen; granddaughters; Stephanie Powers, Hannah Griffin; brothers, Ed Powers and wife Susie, and Don Powers and wife Marcia of Little Rock, AR. He is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held Friday, January 21, 2011 from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Kilpatrick Funeral Home West Monroe.
