Gilbert J. Hise Sr., 92, passed away at 8:20 p.m. Friday, April 18, 2008, at Eldercare Nursing Home of Alton while under the care of Saint Anthony's Hospice.
He was born on Nov. 18, 1915, in Ridgeway, the daughter of Jacob Henry and Sarah Salina (James) Hise.
He married the former Myrtle M. McDaniel on Sept. 6, 1941, in Jackson, Mo. She survives.
He worked for Duncan Foundry for several years and Alton Public School District 11 as a custodian for 20 years. He was a member of Brown Street Baptist Church in Alton and served his country in the Army during World War II in the Pacific and the European Theatre.
In addition to his wife, he is also survived by one daughter, Doreen Lynn Hise of Phoenix, Ariz.; two sons and daughters-in-law, J.R. and Gayle Hise Jr. of Godfrey and Ronnie Lee and Arnnette Hise of DeMotte, Ind.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ruby Moye of Eldorado, and Geneda Cox of Ridgway.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Burtis, Earl, and Ancel Hise; and two sisters, Cologna Hise and Velma L. Dixon.
In celebration of his life, visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, April 20, at Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Alton.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, April 21, at Brown Street Baptist Church in Alton, with the Rev. David Burman officiating.
Burial will follow at Valhalla Memorial Park Cemetery in Godfrey with full military rites conducted by Alton VFW Post 1308.
Memorials may be made to Brown Street Baptist Church.
