Alonzo M. "Al" Short Jr., 76, died May 19, 2005, at the Flagstaff Medical Center, with family by his side.
Al, or Junior as some of his family called him, was born Aug. 8, 1928, in Denton, Texas, to Emmie and Alonzo M. Short Sr. Al grew up, lived, and moved from place to place in his younger years. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy in World War II and then had numerous self-taught occupations after his service time: carpenter, auto mechanic, welder, and commercial truck driver, just to name a few.
Al was married to Julia Ernestine Ray for 56 years and they lived in Flagstaff for 42 of those years. Al and "Ernie" loved and raised two children and helped to raise most of their grandchildren over the years. As a loving and giving family man he was always there when anyone needed him. He was a good father and a wonderful grandfather and great-grandfather.
Al is survived by his wife, three brothers, two sisters, a son, a daughter, many grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren. He left quite a legacy.
All who knew Al learned something from him. He readily and eagerly passed on his vast knowledge of his trades and the wisdom of his experiences. He enriched many lives, was highly respected, and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Funeral services will be today, May 25, at 2 p.m. at Norvel Owens Mortuary, 914 E. Route 66 in Flagstaff. Al will be placed in the Veterans section of The Citizens Cemetery in Flagstaff. Reception will follow all services at 8605 Arroyo Trail, Flagstaff.
