Humorist. He learned the business of a printer, and gained distinction by writing for the the public journals a series of "Letters from Artemus Ward, Showman." He became a popular lecturer, visited California in 1863, and London in 1866. He published "Artemus Ward His Book," and other works.

Charles Farrar Browne (Artemus Ward) was a favorite writer of Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln read aloud a selection from Artemus Ward to a meeting of the cabinet before announcing the Emancipation Proclamation to them.
