US Congressman. He served with the Bergen County board of freeholders and justices in 1773, 1784, 1791, 1794, and 1798. He was the sheriff of Bergen County from 1778 to 1781 and then again in 1789. He was a member of the New Jersey General Assembly for five terms and judge on Bergen County's Court of Common Pleas from 1803 to 1805. He was elected to the Eighth Congress as a Democratic-Republican and served from March 4, 1803 to March 3, 1805. He was elected to the Tenth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Ezra Darby. He was then reelected to the Eleventh and Twelfth Congresses serving from March 8, 1808 to March 3, 1813. After his service to the US Congress he returned to court of common pleas for 20 years.
