According to "The History of Brome County" p 81-82, "John Allen, another early settler, came from the State of New York. He had been pressed into the Rebel Service in 1776. In his first engagement, he was taken prisoner and carried to Quebec. There he joined the English Army as a private and at the close of the War came out with a Captain's Commission and was granted 200 acres of land in the Township of Sutton. (Listed in Letters Patent, 29 Mar. 1802). This lot was above Thibault's Place eastward, and here he lived and died. Male children were William, Hugh, Stephen, John and James. Of these, Hugh, Stephen and John settled on the Belmont Road near London, Ontario."

John Allen was one of four brothers of New York Mayor Stephen Allen, FAG 9628, and was the only brother to survive to old age. Two brothers died in infancy, and one, William, was lost at sea at about age 25.
