My maternal 2nd great-grandfather, James, was a son of Larkin and Unknown Mother McClary. His siblings were Martha (b. 1852), George J., Larkin, Thomas (b. 1861), Amanda (b. 1863) and John Sherman.

James married Mary Ann Haggard on December 31, 1874 in Liberty Township, Washington Co., MO. and they had 3 daughters, my maternal great grandmother Julia Ann (b. May 1877), Emma (b. 1879) and Alice (b. Feb. 1882).

Mary Ann died between 1882 and 1892 and daughter Emma died between 1880 and 1900. James married Mrs. Martha J. Payton Turley on September 15, 1892 (she had a daughter, Flora Turley, born in 1887 with her previous husband who was deceased).

James and Martha had additional children: Carlos (b. Aug. 1893), Burkley "Bert" (b. Mar. 1895), Pearl (b. May 1898), and Alpha (b. Sept. 1899).

Aunt Annie fondly remembers her dad, Wiley W. Smith, in the late 1920s and early 1930s taking her and her siblings to visit their grandparents, James and Martha, before James death in 1932.

James is listed as a Brickmason in the 1930 census, a trade which some of his brothers were also part of.

His obituary was published in the 12-22-1932 edition of The Current Local, Van Buren, MO on the front page (used with permission).

ANOTHER AGED CITIZEN OF COUNTY PASSES

"James McClary, aged about 79 years, passed away Wednesday morning at his home on Dry Valley, following a brief illness due largely to old age.

Mr. McClary was native to this county and during his younger days was active in community life of the west end of the county where he spent most of his long life. He was one of the best known citizens of this section and highly respected by those who knew him.

He leaves an aged wife by second marriage, and four children, Mrs. Alice Heitman of Flat River, Mrs. Pearl Williamson of Van Buren, Burkley McClary of Winona, Mrs. Alpha Moore of Granite City, Illinois, and a step-daughter, Mrs. Flora Jaco of Dry Valley. Burial will be in the Dry Valley cemetery today. We have not learned details of funeral arrangements."

A HUGE "Thank You" to Robert J. Stauffer, Jr. for creating this memorial originally.
