Lillian White was born 22 October 1868 in Wooden Valley, Napa County, California, the oldest child of Henry C. White and Elizabeth J. Grigsby. At the time of the 1880 census she was living with her parents in Dayton Township, Butte County, California. She was twelve years old at this time and little is known of her childhood. As the daughter of a farmer she may have been accustomed to hard work on the farm; however, in 1880 her father had three white laborers, one Chinese cook and twelve Chinese laborers. As well as being a farmer Henry C. White was also a stage coach driver and the owner of a livery stable.
