MATILDE N. MARTINEZ

CARLSBAD--A Christian wake service for Matilde "Mate" N. Martinez, 79, of Irvin Street, is set for 7 p.m. today at San Jose Catholic Church. Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev. Tom Merrill as celebrant. Burial will follow in Carlsbad Cemetery.

Mrs. Martinez died Wednesday (Sept. 28, 1994) at Guadalupe Medical Center.

She was born Nov. 22, 1914, in Mapimi, Durango, Mexico, to Paulino and Jacinta Navarro. Her family moved to Loving when she was 6 months old and she grew up there. In 1938, she married Alfredo Martinez and they moved to Carlsbad in 1940. She had worked for St. Francis Hospital, GMC, and Dr. Beto Gutierrez,

She was a member of San Jose Catholic Church and the church's Charismatic Prayer Group. She also served in hospital ministry.

She is survived by four sons, Carlos and Eloy of Carlsbad, Bobby of Los Lunas, and Armando of Windsor, Calif.; one daughter, Anita Salcido, of Carlsbad; 14 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
