Professional Football Player. For six seasons (1962 to 1967), he played at the fullback position in the American Football League with the Buffalo Bills, Denver Broncos and Miami Dolphins. Born Carlton Chester Gilchrist, he attended Har-Brack High School (Pennsylvania), and tried out for the Cleveland Browns' (not making the team), before playing with the Ontario Rugby Football Union. For six seasons (1956 to 1961), he played in the Canadian Football League with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Saskatchewan Roughriders and Toronto Argonauts; Gilchrist earned CFL All-Star status five-times and was a member of the Tiger-Cats' squad which won the Grey Cup title in 1957. After joining Buffalo of the AFL, he had an immediate impact on the league, earning MVP honors in 1962; he was leader four consecutive years in touchdowns (1962 with 13, 1963 with 12, 1964 with 6 and 1965 with 8) and twice in rushing yardage (1962 with 1,096 and 1964 with 981). Gilchrist, (who was also a forceful blocker) was a key member of the Bills' team which captured the 1964 AFL title, he rushed for 122 yards as Buffalo defeated San Diego 20 to 7. He appeared in 8 games with the Dolphins during their inaugural season of 1966, and concluded his career with Denver in 1967, compiling 65 career regular season games, with 4,293 rushing yards and 37 touchdowns; he earned AFL Pro-Bowl status four consecutive years (1962 to 1965). He died from cancer.
