US Congressman. Elected as an Opposition Party candidate to represent New York's 23rd District in the Thirty-fourth Congress, he served from 1855 to 1857. The Connecticut-born Gilbert was raised in Champion, New York, was admitted to the bar in 1843 and settled as a practicing Attorney in Adams, Jefferson County. In 1851 and 1852 he was a member of the State Assembly. An opponent of slavery, Gilbert successfully ran for Congress in the wake of the controversial passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Act (1854). His one published speech, delivered before the US House in August 1856, was on the "Bleeding Kansas" issue. He resigned on February 27, 1857, one week before the end of his term, and sought no further political office. The rest of his life was spent as a banker in Adams, where he also served as village President in 1859 and 1860.
