Henry Miller Keim was a retired hardware dealer in Carthage, Missouri. He had partnered with Joseph Moore McMillan for thirty-one years, starting Keim-McMillan Hardware store in 1888, on North street, north side of square at what now is 119 east Third street, where Jesse Thacker built his first brick building the year Carthage was created as a city, 1873, and started his hardware store. The building is said to have acted as a fire wall in the January 1880 fire, saving part of the north side of the square. 1907 A. H. Goldstein rented the building on the north side of the square vacated sometime ago by Keim & McMillan, and expects to remove his wholesale and retail clothing and furnishing stock to his new quarters about the middle of May. By this change he will secure about 2,500 square feet more floor space which he has been much in need of. He will use both floors the upstairs being devoted to the sample room and wholesale department and the downstairs to the retail store.Henry and Joe sold to C C Carter in 1919, who moved his south store to this location and operated as Carter Hardware till 1946, when he sold it to then become the Carthage Hardware store and now expanded into adjacent 1880 built Hannum building.

Among the many ventures with S H Regan was in 1903 a purchase of 15 acres of land and platting the town of LaRussell in Jasper county, Missouri.

His wife Ada Ely Keim had pre-deceased him on April 22, 1927. He passed away at age 75 years, 8 months & 18 days of a cerebral hemorrhage.

H. M. Keim, retired pioneer Carthage hardware merchant, died at 4:45 o'clock this morning at the Keim apartments, 910 South Main Street. He had been ill since Sunday when he suffered a cerebral hemorrhage. He was 75 years old.

Mr. Keim's death marks the passing of one of the few remaining early pioneer business men, who had a hand in the upbuilding of this community beginning more than 40 years ago. The last ten years Mr. Keim had been retired but he had retained an active interest in the hardware industry, attending the meetings of the state hardware dealers and other associations regularly. During the 40 years Mr. Keim was actively engaged in business here he was one of the unostentatious wheel-horse workers in many major projects for the development of the community. He was recognized as a man of rare business sagacity and his advice went far with his colleagues. He was one of the workers in the old Carthage Business Men's League and was instrumental in aiding in much of the good that organization accomplished.

Henry M. Keim was born August 28, 1854 in Columbus, Ohio. His father died when he was a child and he went to work as a boy to help his mother. With his mother he came to Carthage and at the age of 16 began work in the McCrilllis hardware store. For more than 15 years he was employed with that firm. In 1888 he formed a partnership with Joseph McMillan, launching the Keim & McMillan Hardware business. The two men were equal partners. Starting in a small way this firm in later years became widely known as a leader in the hardware business industry in this section. The firm continued until 1919 when the partners sold their business to C. C. Carter, the Carter store now operating at the Keim & McMillan location on the north side of the square.

Mr. Keim was married here to Miss Ada Ely of Carthage. Mrs. Keim died two years ago and since that time, an only daughter, Miss Lois Keim, has been her father's close companion. She is the only surviving relative.

Funeral services were held at the Ulmer-Drake funeral home.
Rev. Dr. A. K. Wray officiated.
