Nathaniel enlisted in the Confederate States Army on 8 May 1862 at the Pensacola & Georgia Railroad Station #5 in Madison County, Florida. He was mustered as a Private in Company A, 8th Florida Infantry. On 26 November 1862 he was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant. He was wounded, left hip, in combat May 1864. He died at General Hospital #4 in Richmond, Virginia on 28 May 1864 of vuleus selopeticum.
