Mrs. E.S. Collins
Zera Scruggs, the daughter of Capt. C.C. and Martha Scruggs, was born in Denton, Texas. She attended the public schools there and later attended Baylor University at Waco. On September 13, 1890, she was married to her childhood sweetheart, Eugene S. Collins at Denton and the young couple came to Hartley, Texas, where Mr. Collins was established in business. A few years later, the couple moved to a ranch east of Hartley, and later moved to Channing where they lived for many years. Mr. Collins owned and operated the old Channing Mercantile and Banking Co. Store. Mr. & Mrs. Collins were the parents of nine children, eight of whom lived to adulthood and they also reared two grandchildren.
After the death of Mr. Collins in 1950, Mrs. Collins moved to Pampa to make her home with two daughters who live there. She died in 1953 and is buried in the Channing Cemetery beside her husband.
