MYDLAND, Elma V.
PLAINS – Funeral services for Elma V. Mydland, 87, of Plains, were held Saturday, March 4, at the First Lutheran Church in Plains with the Rev. Bob Nagy officiating. Burial followed in Plains Cemetery.
Mrs. Mydland died of natural causes Tuesday, Feb. 28, 1995, at Clark Fork Valley Nursing Home in Plains.
Elma was born Sept. 16, 1907, at Coulee City, Wash., the youngest of four children of Everett and Vinnie Goakey. Her mother died in 1911, so Elma spent much of your younger life with her grandparents, Augusta and Annetta Goeakey at Rice, Wash.
She later moved to eastern Montana where she met and married Douglas E. Smith. They later were divorced.
Elma and Gus Myrstol were married. He later died in a hunting accident.
March 12, 1934, Elma and Ludvig Mydland, a sheep herder, were married at Big Timber, Mont. In 1935, the couple moved to Milltown, Mont., and later to Stevensville before moving to Plains in 1937. Ludvig preceded her in death in 1973.
Elma sold her house in 1979, and lived with her children until she became a resident of Clark Fork Valley Nursing Home in 1984.
She was a charter member of the First Lutheran Church of Plains.
Survivors include two sons, Douglas Smith and Benjamin Myrstol, both of Plains; four daughters, Ellen Isakson, Port Orford, Ore.; Donna McCrea and Maria Barber, both of Plains; and Nancy James, Milton-Freewater, Oreg.; six grandsons, Larry Smith, Las Vegas, Nev.; Bradley James, Portland, Ore.; Charles McCrea and Christopher Allen, both of Plains; Michael Locker, Kalispell; and Daren Brekke, with the U.S. Army at Hinesville, Ga.; 11 granddaughters, Ronda Cheney, Port Orford, Ore.; Cynthia Fullman, Hillsboro, Ore.; Linda Anderberg, Spokane, Wash.; Patricia McCrea, Kalispell; Laura Crawford, Ronan; Debi Kulawinski, Plains; Shirley Brown, Sharon Payant, Teresa James and Amanda James, all of Milton-Freewater, Ore.; and Fawn Stene, Bigfork; 39 great-grandchildren. Two of Elma's great-grandsons, Eric Anderberg and Daniel Austin, are in the U.S. Army.
She was preceded in death by two husbands, Gus Myrstol and Ludvig Mydland; a sister, Viola Barkhoff; two brothers, Howard and Raymond Goakey; a daughter, Sharon Newkirck; and two granddaughters, Mary Louise Allen and Connie McCrea Austin.
The family suggested memorials to the First Lutheran Church or to Clark Fork Valley Nursing Home of Plains.
Coffelt-Bunch Funeral Service of Plains was in charge of arrangements.
