Birth: unknown, Greece
Death: Nov., 1998

A funeral service will be held today for Constantine A. "Cookie" Angelou of Randolph, the former proprietor of Cookie's Apollo Spa on Dudley Street in Dorchester.

Mr. Angelou died Saturday in his home in Randolph. He was 94.

By all accounts, Cookie's Apollo Spa was a burger joint right out of the TV show "Happy Days." Mr. Angelou flipped hamburgers and hot dogs and dispensed fountain drinks while local high schoolers filled the booths and loudly went about the business of growing up.

Yesterday, one who frequented the spa described Mr. Angelou as a "surrogate father with a deep, booming voice and eyes in the back of his head."

Mr. Angelou was born in Thessaly, Greece. He owned and operated Cookie's Apollo for more than 30 years until about 1971, when it closed. And he would tolerate no shenanigans. This, of course, was in the days before children talked back to their elders. If you were caught smooching in the booths, smoking in the bathroom, or otherwise acting up, Mr. Angelou would bar you from his eatery for a week, a punishment that would put a serious crimp in your social life.

At 10 p.m., Mr. Angelou would declare that it was time to go home. And if you didn't go straight home, you'd hear about it, because your parents would call Mr. Angelou. He knew all his customers by name and kept track of what time they left. Getting caught taking the long way home cost many a boy and girl a one-week suspension from the various delights of the Apollo.

Mr. Angelou's tough love did not go unnoticed. As his customers grew older, they started to look back on Cookie and their old neighborhood with nostalgia. At least two reunions of Cookie and his clientele have been held, the most recent a few years ago at a local function hall.

He leaves his wife, Penelope (Bulgaris); two daughters, Mary Tsekrekas of Brighton and Valerie Rountos of Danbury, Conn.; two sons, Arthur of Randolph and Angeles of Danbury, Conn.; 13 grandchildren and a great-grandson.

The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. in the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of New England in Boston. Burial will be in Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge.
