Ruby Lee Parkinson was born January 16, 1923 in Merkel, TX to the home of Alpha and Erwin Williamson, and died December 29, 2010, in Portales. Her family moved to Milnesand before she was 10 years old, and Ruby lived there the rest of her life. On September 3, 1939, in Portales, she was married to Elton Parkinson. She obtained a cosmetology license while she was in her 50's, and worked for several years in Portales as a hairdresser. She and her husband were members of the Milnesand Baptist Church all of their married lives until recent years when the church dissolved, and they moved their membership to the Causey Baptist Church.
Ruby was a longtime member of the Pep Homemaker's Club, and active in the Roosevelt General Hospital Auxiliary for several years. She was always cooking and baking for others and taking care of her friends and neighbors. Her children had birthdays on consecutive days, and she faithfully made each of them a special cake. She also enjoyed doing crafts and various projects. Ruby was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, as well as a loyal friend. She and her husband were chosen Pioneer Couple of the Year for Roosevelt County in 2007.
She is survived by Elton, her husband of more than 71 years of Milnesand; a son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Vivian Parkinson of Milnesand; and a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Wiley Teel also of Milnesand; 9 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, W. T. Melton and a sister, Wilma Black, both of whom died in 2010.
