born October 14, 1882 Eau Claire, Eau Claire County, Wisconsin the son of John Perkins Johnson & Elizabeth Tamson Southmayd.

On the 1900 Census Alfred was living with his family in Stanton, Dunn County, Wisconsin. He is 17 years old then with the occupation of photographer.
In the 1920 census he is listed in Asotin County Washington ~ as Son-in-law to A. E. & Etta Farmer, married to their daughter Ottolena Farmer. He is the manager of the Telephone company.

He passed away on November 28, 1957 Clarkston, Asotin County, Washington.

Funeral services for A. Ray Johnson were conducted at 2 this afternoon at Merchant Chapel. The Reverend Merle Wood pastor of the Clarkston First Baptist Church officiated. Mrs. DeVoe Miller played sacred selections of the organ. Burial was at Normal Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers were Ed Brutzman, Clarence Swanbeck, Ralph Weeks, Claude Palmer, Arthur Hove and D. N.M. Purviance.

A.R. Johnson, Former Mayor, Passes At 75

A. Ray Johnson, 75, former mayor of Clarkston and retired commercial manager of the Lewiston office of the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Co., died yesterday afternoon at 4:30. Death came at Tri-State Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient for one week.

He had suffered a series of strokes and had been in critical condition for several days.

Alfred Raymond Johnson had retired as a manager for the telephone company in 1937 after serving the firm in the Lewiston-Clarkston area since 1902. He was elevated from wire chief to manager in 1909.

Since leaving the telephone company Mr. Johnson spent several years in the plumbing and heating business in the Twin Cities. He later sold hearing aids until his health deteriorated.

Mr. Johnson was Clarkston's mayor during the late 1930's and it was during his administration that modern lighting was placed on Sixth Street. Also during his term, the Interstate Bridge was dedicated, in June 1939, and he took an active part in the observance.

ON DRAFT BOARD

In 1941, Mr. Johnson was appointed to the Asotin County Selective Service Board, a position he held until 1947. He was board chairman for part of the period. In January of 1946, Mr. Johnson was chosen to represent the state of Washington at Washington, D.C., when a Selective Service worker from each state was honored for distinguished service. He received a medal from former Presiden Harry Truman.

Mr.Johnson was born Oct. 14, 1882, at Eau Claire, Wis., and lived there until securing employment with the telephone company and moving to the Lewiston-Clarkston valley in 1902.

Mr. Johnson was affiliated with the Elks, Masonic, and Knight of Pythias lodges. He was recently awarded an honorary life membership in the Lewiston Elks Lodge. he was also a member of Telephone Pioneers.

On Feb. 17, 1912, Mr. Johnson was married to Ottelena M. Farmer, member of a pioneer Asotin County family. Mrs. Johnson survives at the family home, 1047 8th St.

Other survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Betty Johnson Krantz of Salt Lake City; a foster daughter, Mrs. John C. (Georgia) Wrighter of Clarkston; and three grandchildren.
