Mary Virginia Saunders Quinn

Shreveport, LA - Mary Virginia Saunders Quinn, 97, a long time Shreveport resident, died on January 31, 2002. She was born in Mansfield, LA on August 2, 1904, the daughter of Viva Paxton Saunders and Denny Watt Saunders. She attended Mansfield Female College and graduated from Randolph-Macon Woman's College, Lynchburg, VA, in 1924. Before her marriage to the late Dr. Harold Joseph Quinn, she taught at Foster Hall School and was a reporter for the Shreveport Times. Later she wrote for and edited the magazine of the Shreveport Chamber of Commerce. Throughout her married life she was active in the community, serving as President of the Shreveport Medical Society Auxiliary and Ball Chairman for the Demoiselle Club. She was a long time parishioner of the Cathedral of St. John Berchmans, a charter member of the Junior League of Shreveport and active in the National Society of Colonial Dames in the State of Louisiana. She is survived by three children, Dr. Harold Joseph Quinn and his wife Robin Youngblood MacNicol-Quinn, Virginia Blair Quinn Evans and her husband George Jones Evans, Jr., all of Chapel Hill, NC; and Margaret Quinn of Cincinnati, OH; five grandchildren, David Saunders Quinn of Little Rock, Dr. John Vaden Quinn and his wife Kristin Marie Burt Quinn of New Orleans, Rebecca Blair Quinn Purgerson and her husband James Robert Purgerson, Jr., of Baton Rouge, Mary Hensley Evans of Rosendale, NY, and George Coulter Evans of Fort Wayne, IN; and two great-grandchildren, Eliza Paxton Quinn and Margaret Frances Quinn of New Orleans. She is also survived by Judith Crow McColgan of Shreveport and nieces Helen Jane Reddy Blackwell of Arlington, VA, Evelyn Humphreys Quinn of Shreveport and Gay Ann Quinn of Houston. The family is deeply grateful to all of Mrs. Quinn's caregivers, in her later years, especially Juanita Robinson and Eurell Burks. Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Michael the Archangel Chapel of the Cathedral of St. John Berchmans at 10 a.m. on Thursday, February 7 followed by burial at Forest Park Cemetery. Pallbearers will be David Saunders Quinn, John Vaden Quinn, George Coulter Evans, James Robert Purgerson, Jr., Will North Blanchard, and Kevin Keliehor Quinn. Honorary pallbearers are Judith Crow McColgan, O. Delton Harrison, Jr., and Josephine Gaughan Carmody. The family asks that in lieu of flowers memorials be given to Holy Angels Residential Facility, 10450 Ellerbe Road, Shreveport, LA 71106 or to the charity of one's choice.
