For the discovery of who this young man is, I must give considerable credit to a very yellowed typed piece of paper that has been kept in my family's possession for many, many years. It was written by I. A. Hoxie (Isaac Alphonse Hoxie, FindAGrave #83313768), who traveled with his parents, Allen and Olivia (Sargent) Hoxie and siblings westward from Maine to Wisconsin in the 1840s.

Isaac wrote this article after visiting the burial place of his family and friends at The Old Waucoma Cemetery (now Cooksville Cemetery) "while attending the "Old Folk's picnic at Cooksville the 26th ult". "Ult." is a latin abbreviation of the word ultimo mense or last month. It is not dated but towards the last of the article he states, "But I must hasten away to the banqueting hall, for the little village is already astir with teams (horses) and gaily dressed people to pay homage to months and years long gone bye."

In the beginning of the article he wrote relating to Peter Hammond as follows:
"...I made that place my home in 1846 (Cooksville). Then I was only a boy in my minority. The cemetery was neither located nor platted, but the early death of a Mr. Hammond from the state of Maine, who coming west to visit friends, met death early, making it necessary that some suitable location should be made, though it was supposed at the time that the friends of the young man would come and remove the remains to his native home, but it was never done...."

In searching the records for Maine, It was discovered that Peter Chase Hammond, son of Benjamin and Ruth Hammond d. 12 Oct 1851 was mistakenly recorded (or transcribed) as having died in Lincoln, Maine, USA. It appears that his death was reported and recorded in Maine and the assumption was that he had died there (Lincoln, Penobscot, Maine is his place of birth).
