George Washington Curtis was born in Clay Township, Pike County, Indiana, the son of William H. Curtis and Lucinda Anderson. His father, William H. Curtis died around 1849 when George was a toddler. His mother, Lucinda, married on Feb. 21, 1853 to Lindsay "Linzy" Crow, a widower with several children.
George was raised in this family untill he married Mary "Polly" Washburn - Vaughn - Cunningham on August 21, 1867.
After the death of wife Mary (Polly) Washburn Curtis, George's step-son, Joseph William Cunningham, son of Mary (Polly) Washburn and her first husband William Cunningham remained with George and his second wife Jemima Decker.
