Her mother was Perintha Bronson Payson, the first wife of John W. Payson, whose children were known by their births before widower John married his second wife in 1850. Perintha named this Cynthia for her own sister, the Cynthia Ann Bronson who married a Thoophilus Humphrey twenty years before he went off to the Civil War, lucky to be one who returned alive. Some think Perintha and Cynthia had no records, but their names are mixed in with those of relatives at their church. They and two brothers were brought from Connecticut in 1839 by their uncle Ira Bronson, after their parents, Dr. Samuel Bronson and Ursula Humphrey, died back in Connecticut. They were of an age soon to pick a church and a spouse.

The family's church in Pennsylvania was Presbyterian, but disavowed predestination. Their particular congregation instead essentially believed God reacted to the moment, not future unknowns. If correcting things wrong right now was the priority, that was put in to action when their uncle Ira brought them all out of Connecticut.

The congregation was content merely to substitute votes by elected elders, for everyone instead having to gather to vote. Had anyone noticed such gatherings were bad in times of contagion? Key "signs of the times" were an excess of early adult deaths and the noticeable number becoming doctors. Tuberculosis was not called that yet, but had grown rampant, as crowding increased. TB's contagion was not well understood, pre-Pasteur.

---------------Research notes from Findagrave member JBrown, 2021, Aug.----------
Excerpts from chapters in a records book follow, and are labelled by church structure. While populations were small, the church was shared with another town, Warren. The still Congregational, things were decided by majority vote of all gathered . Once each had their own church, Orwell became Presbyterian, instead letting elected elders vote on the congregation's behalf.
