JOPLIN, Mo. -- Kenneth P. Schurman, 78, of Joplin, Mo., died Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at Freeman Hospital, Joplin.
He was born Aug. 27, 1922, at Atchison, to Aver and Verna Elizabeth (Simmons) Schurman. He had lived in Joplin for the past 15 years. He had also lived in Tulsa, Okla., for nine years, and in Baxter Springs for 30 years. He married Carleen Reid on May 19, 1946, at Atchison. She survives.

Mr. Schurman was a member of the Baxter Kiwanis Club, the Baxter Masonic Lodge, a 32nd degree mason, and a member of the Galena Elks Club. He was a member of the Episcopal Faith. He was a funeral director. He owned and operated Schurman Funeral Home in Baxter Springs until 1977. He then worked for nine years for Moore's Southlawn Chapel in Tulsa, before his retirement in 1988.

Additional survivors include four children, Richard Schurman of Colonial Heights, Va.; Ron Schurman and Randy Schurman, both of Joplin; and Roxiann Schurman of Tulsa; a sister, Virginia Kreider of Lawrence; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Hess, in 1985.

Services will be 10 a.m. today at Derfelt's Baxter Chapel in Baxter Springs. Fr. Roger Stinnett and Fr. Dan Erdman will officiate. Burial will be in the Osborne Cemetery, Joplin.
