2nd Lieutenant Lahniers was a Flight Engineer aboard U.S. Army Air Corps B-29-40-MO Superfortress #44-86276. After departing Alamogordo Army Airfield in New Mexico on a training flight, for a mock bombing target to Fort Worth, his aircraft collided in mid-air with Clovis, New Mexico-based B-29 #42-93895 in the skies over Weatherford, Texas. Many crewmembers of both aircraft bailed out but were killed by burning wreckage. Only two survived, and eighteen perished.
