EDWIN H. VOORHEES 1919 - 1999 MOREHEAD CITY - Edwin H.Voorhees, one of the state's finest watercolor painters, died October 29 at age 79 of heart disease. Voorhees, who was born in Gulfport, Mississippi, spent his youth in southern California. During World War II, he served as a naval aviator. In 1943 he married the former Mildred Bradsher. The couple celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary in July. After the war, Voorhees worked for
Dupont in New York City and earned a degree in business administration at Adelphi University. While working in NYC, he also attended classes at Art Students League. In 1964 he, Millie, and their six children moved to Morehead City. There he opened his Waterfront Art Studio, taught watercolor classes, and with his wife bought and operated Dee Gee's Gifts and Books. The couple traveled extensively to England and Europe to study and paint. Voorhees, a founding member of the Mattie King Davis Art Gallery in Beaufort, was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Beaufort. As a layman he completed a six week continuing education program for Episcopal priests at Virginia
Theological Seminary in Alexandria, VA. Later, he became the first layman to serve as chairman of Kanuga, the denomination's conference center in western NC. He is survived by his loving wife, six of his seven children, and ten grandchildren. Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the Beaufort Historical Association for the Edwin Voorhees Memorial Fund at the Mattie King Davis Art Gallery,P.O.
