Harry Austin Cantonwine was the son of David & Eliza (Elson) Cantonwine, the grandson of Michael & Catharine (Myers/Myres) Cantonwine, and the great grandson of Charles and Mary Magdalena (Scholl) Cantonwine.

Charles, the patriarch of the Cantonwine family, immigrated to America from Prussia in 1806, arriving in Philadelphia, Penn., aboard the ship Orlando. The ship's passenger list shows "Chr. Kuntentwine, single man." The name Kuntentwine later evolved to Cantonwine, and Charles appears to be the only surnamed Kuntentwine/Cantonwine to immigrate to America. Eight or so years after his arrival in Philadelphia, in about 1814, Charles married Mary Magdalena Scholl, daughter of Charles Jacob & Margaret (Fuhr) Scholl, in Bedford county, Pennsylvania.

On November 22, 1900, Harry married Emma Matilda Danburg, daughter of John and Caroline (Barber) Danburg. They had five children: Harold, Lula, Guy, Charles R., and Paul E. They later divorced. In August of 1921 Harry married Madeline Berry but the marriage lasted only a short time. Then, in June of 1926 he married Pauline May Blythe in Lee, Lawrence county, South Dakota. Pauline was the daughter of James & Emma A (Richardson) Blythe.
