Before the Civil War, John T Denmead was a volunteer fireman in the Americus Hook and Ladder #2 also known as "Old Yank" while working as as a stone cutter in Jersey City.

At the outbreak of the Civil War he served as a private in the 2nd NJ (Militia) Co, H. Denmead enlisted on 7/24/1862 as a Sergeant in Co B, 13th NJ and was promoted to Quartermaster Sergeant (11/1/1862) then later commissioned 2nd Lieut (1/18/1863) Co B. He resigned 8/13/1863. Denmead was an active member of the 13th NJ Veterans Association.

His brother in law was Capt Edward Dingler, Capt Co F, 7th NJ (# 8077279)

Denmead served as Acting Chief Engineer of the Jersey City Fire Department. While suffering from throat cancer he succumbed to this illness at his home in Jersey City.
