Miss Gazel Manchester, aged 51 and daughter of Mr. And Mrs. George Manchester of Orwell, was instantly killed yesterday morning at about 8:30 o'clock when the car she was driving to her work at the Citizens National Bank here went out of control on an icy section of Orwell Hill and crashed into a tree. The force of the impact caved the right side of the machine into the left side where Miss Manchester was seated as the vehicle wrapped itself around the tree. It was demolished. Miss Manchester, who was alone, sustained a fractured neck, fractures of both legs and internal injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene by Dr. Henry Brown of LeRaysville. Mrs. Robert Kennedy of Orwell heard the crash and was the first at the scene. She shut off the ignition, as the motor was still running. Rex Russell, also of Orwell, then arrived and notified the State Police here who in turn summoned the Sayre State Police as the tragedy occurred within the Sayre station's jurisdiction. Miss Manchester was trapped in the car and the seats had to be removed before her body could be released. The Wysox ambulance was called and removed the remains to Sutfin Funeral Chapel at Nichols. Miss Manchester was born at North Loup, Neb., on June 24, 1905. She graduated from Towanda High School in 1924 and for a time was employed in the general store at Orwell. Later she worked here for the Towanda Wholesale Co. In 1939 she joined the staff of the Farmers National Bank at Rome, showing such an aptitude for the work that she became teller and then assistant cashier. Ten years ago she came to the Citizens National Bank of Towanda and at the time of her death was a teller, was in charge of the Savings Account Dept. and the Christmas Club. Scores of Towanda and vicinity residents came to know her at the Citizens Bank and were attracted by her courtesy, her efficiency and her general thoughtfulness and pleasant manner. She made many friends in Towanda and her tragic death yesterday morning caused deep shock and profound sorrow. She was a member of Orwell Grange No. 1561. Surviving in addition to her parents, George and Lulu Manchester, is a brother, Clarence, of Dattesburg, S.C. The body is at the Sutfin Funeral Chapel in Nichols where it will be until the day of the funeral. Friends may call there this evening and Wednesday evening from 7 to 9 o'clock.
