Thomas E. Autzen (1918-1997) was the son of Thomas J. Autzen. He worked as an active philanthropist in the Portland area much of his adult life. Since the Autzen Foundation was first established, it has helped to raise funds and provide numerous grants to charitable organizations, many of which are located in the states of Oregon and New York. Thomas E. Autzen was chairman of the University of Oregon Foundation and served on the boards of the Japanese Garden Society, the High Desert Museum, the Columbia River Maritime Museum, Pacific Crest Outward Bound, and Good Samaritan Hospital.

"Tom Autzen lived a lifetime of incredibly visionary philanthropy, not only to the University of Oregon," said Dave Frohnmayer, president of the University of Oregon. He worked for about a decade in the business founded by his grandfather, Peter Autzen (Portland Manufacturing Co.) When the company was sold in 1952, the Autzen's established the Autzen Foundation with Thomas E. Autzen as president, a job he kept until his death. "He was a very low-key guy who did not do philanthropy for self-aggrandizement," said Greg Chaille, president of the Oregon Community Foundation. "He did it because he knew it would make a difference." The Autzen Foundation is a classic family fund that is very sensitive to the needs of its community.
