Rites to Be Thursday For S. R. Loe

Funeral services for Sherwood R. Loe, 72, prominent Shreveport business leader and former chairman of the Louisiana Board of Highways, will be held Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at Osborn Funeral Home.

Dr. Scott Tatum, pastor of Broadmoor Baptist Church, will officiate for the rites, and burial will be in Forest Park Cemetery.

Mr. Loe died Tuesday at noon at P&S Hospital after a lengthy illness.

He was president of S&L Marine Co., Inc., and Loe Marine Supply, Inc. His home address was 120 Archer Ave.

Mr. Loe was a member of the Shreveport City Planning Commission, predecessor of the Shreveport Metropolitan Planning Commission, for 16 years. He was on the highway board for four years, serving as chairman for two years.

The son of a Bienville Parish planter, he graduated from Bienville High School and Louisiana State University. He was a teacher and principal in Livingston Parish, served as a coach and assistant principal at Delhi and spent about one year in military service during World War I.

He was employed briefly by an oil and gas firm but in 1925 he joined S&L Service and Storage Co. which his father had founded in Shreveport. The name of the firm later was changed to S&L Marine Co., Inc.

He was named to the City Planning Commission in 1936 and served on that agency under tyhree different mayors. Former Gov. Robert Kennon appointed him to the highway board which he served as chairman in 1952 and 1953.

Mr. Loe was twice delegate to the Democratic National Convention. He was active in Broadmoor Baptist Church, Downtown Lions Club, the American Legion, the 40 & 8 and El Karubah Shrine.

Survivors are his widow; one daughter, Mrs. Gordan A. May; three sons, William E. Loe, S. Bruce Loe and Jerry G. Loe, all of Shreveport; a number of grandchildren; and one brother, DeWitte Loe of Sherman, Tex.

Pallbearers will be C. L. Locke, John Barnes, R. R. Adams, Mayor Clyde E. Fant, Dr. Edgar Galloway, Dr. Tom Smith, Henry T. Pye and William Powdrill.
