MARTINSVILLE MORNING POST, Mon., Jan. 4, 1937, p. 1., col. 2 & p. 4, col. 5:
(edited)
James William Cheshire, 73, died around 8:30 a.m. Sunday at his home on Church Street, following a longtime decline in health. He had been confined to his home for the past two months.
The deceased, a lifelong citizen of Henry County, was born on Oct. 20, 1863, at his parental home near Mount Olivet.
He engaged in farming until manhood when he entered the mercantile business. He was in business at Shady Grove, near Figsboro, until 1895, when he moved his family to Martinsville.
Until about seven years ago he was actively engaged in the retail mercantile business here, being associated with his sons in the operation of the business.
Retiring from active business connections some years ago, he was appointed a city magistrate, which office he held up to the time of his death, having been re-elected at the last election.
On October 30, 1883, he was united in marriage to Miss Nannie Elizabeth Self.
Seven children survive. They are Mesdames Joe P. Williams, city; Mrs. John Pearman, Jenkin Jones, W. Va.; Misses Margaret Cheshire, Lexington, Ky., Lucy Cheshire, this city; Harry B., Daniel W., and Thomas Everett Cheshire, all of Martinsville.
Mr. Cheshire was the last member of his family.
The deceased was for many years a consistent member of the Methodist Church.
Final rites will be held from the First Methodist Church today. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
