"Dust to Dust" Mrs EMMA AMES
"The illness of this estimable lady was mentioned last week. It was of short duration, though the deceased had not been in vigorus health for many years. She passed away on Friday last.
Mrs A was born in Erie County, NY., July 30, 1830. She came to Iowa in 1848. Many years ago her husband was taken away from her, and more than half of her life has been spent with her sister, Mrs J.T. Ames and family. These people came to North Tama at a very early day, and have, for over thirty years been numbered amoung our leading citizens.
The deceased has been one of the family, as valuable and as beloved as one of their own blood. She has been an inspiration and blessing to them. Not only her husband and parents, but eight sisters have preceded her to the spirit land. The funeral took place on Sabbath last and was attended by a very large assembly of sympathizing and sorrowing friends. A pure un (illegible) life has closed."

Her parents were Daniel and Polly West Hurd. The obituary is in error that Mary Jane was her sister, she was a Read; a daughter of Charles and Isabella Lee Read. They were sisters-in-law: Emma's late husband Asa Ames being a brother of John T. Ames.
