Author. He was an American playwright, songwriter, and screenwriter of the 1920s through 1940s. He wrote many hit songs with songwriting partner Harry Ruby, including "Who's Sorry Now?," "I Want to Be Loved by You," the Oscar-nominated "A Kiss to Build a Dream On," and the inimitable "Hooray for Captain Spalding." He also wrote screenplays for the Marx Brothers, penning "Animal Crackers" (1930), "Horse Feathers" (1932), and "Duck Soup" (1933). Fred Astaire played the role of Bert Kalmar in the 1950 biographical film "Three Little Words." Kalmar was married to vaudeville dancer Jessie Brown Kalmar. Father of actor Bert Kalmar, Jr.
