DR. GOVERS, OIL CHEMIST, DIES AT HOME HERE, 419 NORTH THIRD STREET 10 February 1943

"Long Illness Fatal to Noted Inventor of Wax Removing Process".

Dr. Francis Xavier Govers, consulting chemist for the the Texas company at Lawrenceville, IL and inventor of the Govers process for removing wax from lubricating oils, died at his home, 419 North Third street, Wednesday night at 9:45. His death followed an illness extending over a period of several months. He had been confined to his bed several weeks.

Dr. Govers was a native of New Rochelle, New York son of the late George P. and Mary Willis Govers. The Govers family settled in New Rochelle in 1836 and was one of the first Catholic families in the city.

They were the founders of Blessed Sacrament Church parish and it was in Dr. Govers' grandfathers's home at Huguenot and Mechanic streets that the first Catholic Mass was said in New Rochelle. Dr. Govers' family lived on the present site of the New Rochelle Trust Company at the time of his birth.

Dr. Govers received his doctor of chemistry degree from Purdue University and before moving to Indiana about 20 years ago had been chief chemist of the Borden Milk Company.

He was the inventor of the Govers process for removing wax from Lubricating oils. His invention of the Govers Process from which Havoline Wax-Free oil was patented, brought him wide spread publicity, city newspapers and magazines devoting considerable space to publicizing the achievement.

Dr. Govers was formerly head of an eastern concern, the Govers Pretroleum Cracking Company.

He began his contact with old Indian Refinery back in 1920, but did not go to Lawrenceville until in 1925. Dr. Govers, a native of New Rochelle, N. Y., was brought to Lawrenceville in the early part of 1925 by Col. James Graham, former president of the Indian Refinery and was given a contract as a consulting chemist.

At the time the Texas company purchased the assets of the Indian, his contract was continued and he was still consulting chemist of the staff at the time of his death.

Dr. Govers is survived by his widow, Mrs. Sallie Govers, and two children; Francis Xavier Govers II and Sallie Anne, both at home. He also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Phillip Harvey and Miss Eleanor Govers of New Rochelle, New York.

He was a member of the old Catheral.

Funeral services will be conducted from the Gardner chapel Friday morning at 10:30, following which the body will be sent to New Rochelle for final services and interment.
There will be a recitation of the Rosary at the Gardner chapel Thursday night at 7;30. The body will remain at the chapel.

Funeral services for Dr. Francis Govers were conducted form the Church of the Blessed Sacrament at New Rochelle, N. Y., Monday morning with celebration of solemn requiem high mass. Interment was made in the Holy Sepulcher cemetery.
PALL BEARERS; all members of the Texas company with which Dr. Govers was associated as advising Chemist, were B. H. Anglin, P. C. Sullivan, John S. Worden, J. D. Deturler, Justin Fritts, W. E. Kuhn, R. G. Rankin and G. B. Gogart.

Francis Xavier Govers achieved and accomplished a lot in his life time. His Grandparents George Patrick and Anastasia Burns Govers and father George Patrick, Jr were all born in Longford, Ireland. With his father 5 years old, his grandparents went to Liverpool, England 18 Aug 1835 got on the ship American and came to New York Sep 14 1835. They moved to New Rochelle, Westchester Co. New York in 1836 and started a Painting & Signs business, George P. Govers & Sons. After his Grandfather died, Francis's father took over the business. When Francis's father passed away, Francis occupation was House & Sign painter. After his parents passed away Francis X. Govers started his adventures of Life.
