John McClure and Martha Townsend married 10 October 1866 in Towns County, Georgia. Together they raised ten known children.
He served in the Civil War as a private in 5th Tennessee Mounted Infantry, filing for pension in 1890. He was a farmer and loved to hunt. Family members remember he led many an unsuspecting hunter over the mountains with his realistic turkey gobble hence a nickname of "Gobbling John".
His immense love of playing the fiddle also sparked the nickname "Fiddling John".
