Gladys Hawkins Powell 12/6/1915~11/24/2005
On November 24, 2005 a kind and gentle soul passed from our sight but not from our hearts. Dear Mom, Grandma, Great-Grandma and Friend, at almost 90 years, your long earthly journey has ended and you're back in the arms of your beloved husband, Walter; your daughter, Janeen; your parents, and grandparents, brother and sisters whom you have missed. We are excited for you in your joyful and long-waited reunion.
Gladys was born December 6, 1915 in American Fork, Utah to Arthur and Emily Hawkins.
While serving in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II, she met Walter Powell, a fellow serviceman. They fell in love and married in the Salt Lake LDS Temple September 4, 1946. Shortly afterwards they moved in to their "one and only" home on Hollywood Avenue in Salt Lake City. For the next 54 years she devoted her life to serving her family, friends and Church family in the Hollywood neighborhood.
She set an example of love, generosity and service to all she knew.
She never turned anyone away.
She sold her home in June 2000 and moved to Antioch, CA, where she lived out the remainder of her days.
She is survived by her daughter, and two sons: Kate Olson (Murray, UT); "Tim" (Antioch, CA); and Mark (Kersey, CO); three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Family and friends will gather at 11:00 a.m. on December 10, 2005, at the Memorial Estates Redwood, 6500 South Redwood Road.
Interment is at Memorial Estates Redwood.
