Julio Gallo
Birth: Mar. 21, 1910
Alameda County
California, USA
Death: May 2, 1993
Stanislaus County
California, USA

Wine Maker. Head of Ernest and Julio Wine. Younger Brother of Ernest Gallo. Born in Oakland, California, to Joseph and Assunta "Susie" Gallo. Julio Gallo grew up speaking both English and Italian. Him and his older brother Ernest (1909-2007) on their parents farm in Antioch, California. The boys had to live around their father whose volatile and excitable temper would bring the boys several beatings. There wine making abilities first came to light watching there father and uncle make moonshine at their farm in Livermore, California, which lead to there father being charged with violating the Volstead Act. The charges would be later dropped. Joseph Gallo tried once again to start a business, in Escalon, California the first Gallo Vineyard was started, but tragedy struck when a fire burned the vines. By the next year the business had started up again, and a demand for wine grapes were growing. Prohibition would put an end to the family's growing business. The production of wine was halted, but the family kept trying to make it work unsuccessfully. In the early 1930s both brothers took a wife, Ernest married Amelia Franzia (1910-1993) whose family was also in the wine business. Julio would marry Aileen Lowe (1913-1999), the only member of the Gallo family not to be of Italian Heritage, but she was welcomed just the same. Now with families of their own the brothers were ready to keep the wine flowing. Before things could get better, they got worse. On June 21, 1933, tragedy struck, and the brothers experienced their greatest setback. Aileen and Julio had taken Julio and Ernest's younger brother Joseph to stay with them in Modesto for the summer on June 20th. Joseph Gallo Sr. seemed unusually out of sort, and their normally chipper mother was out of sorts as well, say they should not worry what happened to her as long as "my boys get along always," she said. The next morning Aileen Gallo answered the phone; a reporter asked if she was a relative of Joseph and Susie Gallo. When she answered yes, the reporter said that Mr. And Mrs. Gallo were found shot to death at there house near Fresno, California. Mrs. Gallo was found laying in the field by the barn, shot in the back, Mr. Gallo was at the dining room table, with a gunshot wound to his head. Though there was always suspicion of the death, Ernest and Julio were always considered suspects, the death was ruled a murder suicide, Joseph Gallo killing his wife, and then taking his own. The brothers Gallo moved on. 1933 was a tragic and profitable year. With a loan from Ernest Gallo's mother-in-law Theresa Franzia, The Ernest and Julio Gallo Winery was born. Julio and Ernest finally made it. Gallo Winery would go on to become the great success it is today. Julio would experience more tragedy, including the suicide of Julio and Aileen's youngest son Phillip in 1958, as well as the death of their grandson Mark in 1978. The brother's would also sue their younger brother Joseph, a Cheese Maker, for the right to the name Gallo, and win. Gallo Winery is one of the top winemakers in the world. Julio and Ernest completed their Autobiography in 1993. Before it was released the Jeep carrying Julio and Aileen Gallo flipped over, Aileen survived with minor injuries, Julio did not. He was 83. Aileen would join him six years later, Ernest would continue on without him. (bio by: The Perplexed Historian)
