John is first found in the 1860 US Census living with his parents in the Jackson Township, Camden County, Missouri. He was an infant with his age recorded as "0".

The 1880 US Census shows John was born in 1860 and was working as a farm laborer in Jackson, Camden County, Missouri with his 18 year old wife, Mary Ann.

The 1900 US Census shows the family living in Auglaize, Camden County, Missouri (northern part). This census is the basis used for the birth dates of this family except for John's which comes from his death certificate. The census shows John was in born 1859 while the certificate says 1857. Mary was born 2/1862 and each child as recorded above.

The 1910 US Census shows the family living in Auglaize, Camden County, Missouri. John is recorded as being age 53, Mary and Mary as being 48.

The 1930 US Census shows John as living with his youngest daughter, Cora Toler and her family at Fort Osage, Jackson County, Missouri. He is 72 years of age with an estimated year of birth being 1857 and widowed.

John's death certificate shows he died in the Independence Sanitorium, Independence, Jackson County, Missouri. His cause if death is recorded as being a fractured lower jaw with a ruptured spleen and intestines. The death certificate erroneously lists his wife as his mother.
