Thomas Lee Wymer, 71, of Bowling Green, passed away Saturday, November 13, at St. Luke's Hospital, after a nine-month battle with leukemia.

Tom was born November 25, 1938, in Columbus, Ohio, to Lee and Edna Wymer, both deceased.

Tom's education included a B.A (cum laude) in English from Rice University in 1960. He then attended the University of Oklahoma for graduate study and came to Bowling Green State University in 1966 as an Instructor while completing his Ph.D. from the University of Oklahoma (1968).

In 2007, Tom retired as Professor Emeritus from BGSU after a distinguished 40-year career, during which time he served as a faculty member in the English Department, primarily teaching Victorian Literature, Science Fiction and Fantasy.

At different times he served as Acting Director, Technical Communication Programs; Graduate Coordinator, English Department; Assistant Chair, English; and Chair, English Department.

Tom's passion for research, writing, and literature led him to a very productive scholarly career which included co-authoring and co-editing books, writing journal articles and book chapters, and presenting numerous papers at professional conferences. Additionally, during different times in his career, he served on editorial boards of the journal Extrapolation, The Journal of Popular Culture, and The Journal of American Culture Studies. He also wrote or co-wrote grants for awards totaling more than $250,000.

Tom was also a well-respected colleague. To honor him and to recognize his commitment to undergraduate research at BGSU, the English Department has established the Thomas L. Wymer Undergraduate Senior Thesis Award.

Tom loved to play tennis and to mountain climb. He also enjoyed walking, jogging, riding his bicycle, and visiting his grandchildren.

He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Masons.

On September 8, 1962, he and Penelope (Penny) Ray Anthis were married. She survives him.

Tom is also survived by a daughter, Elizabeth Goodrow (John), Atlanta, GA; a son, William Wymer (Karrie), Colorado Springs, CO; three grandchildren, Conner Goodrow, Mitchell Sutton, and Tristen Damon; a brother, Robert Wymer (Beverly), Texas; and a sister, Patricia French (Edward), Texas.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to either the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society or to the English Department, Foundation Account, Thomas L. Wymer Undergraduate Senior Thesis Award.
