World War I Military Figure. He served as a Private in the 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. After heavy trench fighting near the Sanctuary Woods France, in mid June 1915, the 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers was removed from the front to a rest area. Private Docherty with others, was reported absent with out leave or permission. He was apprehended, was tried at a court martial, was found guilty of desertion and sentenced to death at age 20. He was one of 306 British Army and Commonwealth soldiers executed after court martial trials. The 306 men were eventually pardoned in 2006 and they are remembered in a special memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum.
