Ponder - Billy Joe Deussen, 72, of Ponder, Texas, passed away Oct. 24, 2000, at Denton Regional Medical Center. He was born March 9, 1928, in Ponder, Texas, to Edward Deussen and Annie Laura (Wright) Deussen. He graduated from Ponder High School and was the youngest of nine children.
Billy Joe entered the U.S. Marine Corps in 1948 where he served in the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1952. During his time in the USMC he served in the following locations: Yudam, Hargarn, Koto, Hamhung and the Chosin Reservoir. After his discharge he began rodeoing for a living.
Billy Joe Deussen joined the Turtle Association when he was 14 years old. He entered the Fort Worth Rodeo and Stock Show the same year. His turtle membership number was 954, which was also his RCA number during the remainder of his rodeo career.
Billy Joe entered rodeos all over the United States and Canada. Some of the larger rodeo wins Billy Joe had were: Los Angeles one-day rodeo, Cow Palace, Ellensburg, Pendleton, New Orleans, Billings, and Lake Charles. He qualified in the Steer Wrestling at the National Finals in 1961, 62, 63, 64 and 65; finishing fourth in 1961. Billy Joe also worked part-time during the Bronc riding as a pickup man for Tommy Steiner. On Feb. 12, 2000, Billy Joe Deussen was inducted into the Texas Rodeo Cowboy Hall of Fame.
After his rodeo career, Billy Joe started Deussen Sand and Gravel Company in Ponder, Texas. Billy Joe loved life and he loved people.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. tonight, Thursday, Oct. 26, at DeBerry Funeral Directors in Denton. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27, at the First Baptist Church of Ponder with the Rev. Kim Broadstreet officiating the services. Burial will follow at Eakins Cemetery in Ponder.
Pallbearers will be Eddie Joe Deussen, Bob Noble, Tommy Deussen, Craig Snyder, Clem Deussen, Bob Nortdome, George Seals, Don Ford and Don Swafford.
He is survived by his wife, Mary J. Deussen; his sister, Mae Chloe Naler; his brother, Dink Deussen; his children, Sherry Alred, Mackey Alred, Susie Bowers, Jody Allen and Tammy Hall, Buster and girls; and his 10 grandchildren.
DeBerry Funeral Directors is in charge of arrangements.
