Mrs. Mary Owen Dies After Long Illness; Services At Athens. Mrs. Mary Frances Owen, 84, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Fannie Jo Welborn here at 5 o'clock Friday morning following an illness which had kept her bedfast for the past several months.Funeral services were held at the Carroll & Lehr Funeral Home Chapel in Athens at 2:00 o'clock Saturday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. L. D. Rose of Athens. Interment followed in the Frizzell Cemetery. Mrs. Owen, a longtime resident of this community, was born in Georgia June 20, 1862, the daughter of the late, Mr. and Mrs. W. N. Shifflett. She came to Texas when a young lady and had lived in Henderson County for the past 60 years.She was united in marriage in 1881 to William Dennis Owen of the Pine Grove Community in Eastern Henderson County. Her late husband, who preceded her in death in 1921, was one of the pioneer settlers of the County, having come to Texas from Georgia in a wagon train.
She had been a member of the primitive Baptist church for fifty years and until failing health and her advanced years prevented, she was an active worker. Surviving are four sons; Bonner H. Owen, Malakoff, S. H. Owen of Waco, E. W. Owen, Wichita Falls and T. B. Owen of Mt. Alba; four daughters,Mrs. E. L. Oliver, San Saba; Mrs. Fannie Jo Welborn, and Mrs. Nettie Boyett, Malakff and Mrs. H. C. Scott of Athens; one brother,S. P. Shifflett of Alvarado; eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren. NOTE: I did not see Mrs. Owen listed in the cemetery books of Henderson County for Frizzell cemetery. I have taken photos of markers at Frizzell cemetery but do not have one for her. But there are some that you can no longer read. (LGR)
