James P. Edwards

Gloucester Point - James "Capt. Red" Preston Edwards, 98, native of Mathews, died Friday, Sept. 20, 1996. He was a member of Severn Presbyterian Church, Naxera.

In 1962 he retired as a boast master, after 45 years of employment with C & O Railroad, now Chessie System. He was the oldest living member of Ducks Unlimited and past member of the Master Mates and Pilots.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia S. Edwards. He is survived by four daughters, Virginia Anne Edwards of Hayes, Elva Joyce Adamson and her husband, Henry, of Arvada, Colo., Kay Edwards Riley and her husband, Pastor Leonard D. Riley, of Hampton, and Fay Edwards Mull and her husband, Eugene, of Newport News; one son, Capt. Jerry Edwards and his wife, Anne, of Hayes; one niece, Mary Virginia Barnette of Mathews; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson.

A funeral service conducted by the Rev. H. Wilson will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Chapel of Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point. Interment will follow in Rosewell Memorial Garden Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home, Saturday from 7 to 8 p.m.

Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Abingdon Volunteer Fire Department or to Severn Presbyterian Church Outreach Committee.
