Alexander leased the family farm and went to California during the Gold Rush. According to The Book of Dow, by Robert Piercy Dow (1929), Alexander abandoned the sea to become a farmer of North Searsport, Maine.
An inventory of Alexander's family in 1850 read: 13 children, 250 bushels of apples, 200 bushels of potatoes, 70 pounds of wool, and $25 worth of farm implements.
Cemetery records for Evergreen Cemetery in North Searsport (Waldo County) Maine where he is buried verify that Alexander died in November, 1850 at 48 years and 10 months of age.
